Youth Track Keynote: Sam Johnson, Founder of Colossal Collective
Limited Capacity seats available

The Colossal Collective is a group of artists, engineers, builders and performers based in Boise, Idaho with a singular mission: to create magic, and spread a sense of childlike wonder through their larger-than-life puppets. Whether it’s sharing a fist-bump with a 20’ tall gorilla, gazing up to a canopy of massive color-changing dragonflies, riding on the back of a full-size Apatosaurus, or dancing between the legs of a 30’ technicolor spider -- the Colossal Collective has been providing unforgettable and fantastical experiences since 2012. Their creations make regular appearances at the Treefort Music Festival, Burning Man, and art festivals throughout the western US. They’re also frequently spotted roaming the streets of downtown Boise.

The Collective was founded by Sam Johnson, a 35 year-old artist who grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sam holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Whitman College, and an MBA from Boise State University. Sam will share what he’s learned about managing large-scale creative projects, discuss the challenges and opportunities that come with integrating technology into art, and explain how the Colossal Collective uses the tools of business as an amplifier for its creative visions.

Craving Technical Debt
Limited Capacity filling up

We continually encounter the uncertainty of how much and which technical debt to take on or pay down. We crave certainty in a similar way we crave primary motivations like food or sleep. Forewarned is forearmed: we’ll explore how uncertainty influences debt choices and how to recognize the cost of certainty.

Richard Newman, a leader in technology development with several startups and going concerns, shares with us how cognitive bias and philosophy affects technical debt.

From Concept to Customers: The Boise Restaurant Start-up Panel
Limited Capacity filling up

Raise your hand if you have ever dreamed of opening your own restaurant or business. Why not? Restaurants bring in roughly $660.5 Billion (yes, billion) per year. Sounds like a profitable venture. Sadly, 30% of restaurants fail (or are sold) after one year and that number escalates to 60% after three years. So what is the key to success and/or longevity?

“The Boise Restaurant Start-Up” panel will focus on what it takes to take a culinary business from concept to customers.  From a signature dish that sells out every time to a food truck to a successful branded restaurant, hear from restaurateurs who have weathered the storm, identify the challenges, and built a successful enterprise.

Startup Crawls are a chance to take an onsite visit to Boise tech companies!

Black Box VR was founded by fitness fanatics Ryan DeLuca & Preston Lewis. The team spent years building Bodybuilding.com into the largest online supplement retailer in the world (with nearly $500m in annual sales). With the collaboration of many talented individuals, they created some of the world’s most recognized supplement brands, chart-topping fitness mobile applications, were honored with award-winning health & fitness campaigns, and created the world’s largest online fitness social network (with over 3m members), while always holding true to the mission of changing people’s lives.

In 2016 Preston and Ryan decided to start their new venture, Black Box VR, with a mission to disrupt the fitness industry once again by creating innovative products and experiences that create lasting change in people’s lives. After trying virtual reality for the first time, Ryan and Preston knew they were experiencing a magically immersive technology that, if paired with resistance training, gaming principles and high intensity cardio, will be the winning combination for people trying to reach their health & fitness goals. Black Box VR is redefining fitness as we know it.

Startup Crawl: Black Box VR
Limited Capacity seats available

Jonathan Cardella founded multiple startups before picking up from San Francisco, moving his family to Boise, and launching Ventive in 2014. After bootstrapping Ski West from an idea to $50M in revenue and a successful exit to Overstock.com, Jon saw an overwhelming need for nimble, experienced product teams who could rapidly scale with a company's growing needs.

Ventive uses design thinking to solve business problems.

We excel at applying the right technologies to improve business processes and customer experiences. We manage all the design, development, and technical challenges behind building and launching a successful product, and our deep bench of technologists, engineers, designers, and project managers ensure that your product provides an optimal user experience.

Building an Industry-Leading Infrastructure from Scratch
Limited Capacity seats available

Vacasa started in 2009 when Eric Breon, Vacasa’s CEO and Co-Founder, sat down at his kitchen table with a laptop, and an idea of how he could solve a fundamental problem in the vacation rental industry. He had the idea that he could create a better vacation experience, while also capitalizing on his family’s vacation home on the Oregon Coast. It was here that Eric taught himself how to program, and using PHP he built out a very basic reservation system for his family’s second home.  Fast forward nine years, where Vacasa now manages over 10,000 second homes and has become the biggest vacation rental company in the United States. Certainly, Vacasa had to stand up from that kitchen table, but what allowed them to grow so fast? What innovations were made to build up from a “kitchen table” reservations system, while boosting the integrity of 10,000 vacation homes?  Join Caleb Donegan (Vacasa - VP Digital) and Zac Monahan (Vacasa - Senior Dir. Acquisitions) as we talk vacation rentals, and building an industry-leading infrastructure — from scratch.

DevCon: Intro to 3D Printing
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

This will cover the basics of 3D printing.  What is 3D printing? What are the different printer types?  What material can I print with? What software do I need? (spoiler! There is both modeling and printing software.)  What are the common issues with prints? ‘I thought rafts were for the river, not 3D printing.’  Terminology, or how to talk the talk.  There will be at least 1 3D printer  running. (hopefully more!)
